The Mentor Connection will be an opportunity for the Mentoring Program to connect with the mentors and for the mentors to connect with each other. In addition, throughout the semester the Mentoring Connection will also provide updated Mentoring Program information, act as a reminder resource as well as offer mentoring tips.

Update:

1) We would like to thank all the mentors that are participating in the Mentoring Program for their support and time they are spending with their mentees. Through your efforts we are able to provide services to approximately 800 mentees this Fall as compared to 270 mentees last Spring.

2) We are presently developing a Mentoring WEB page. Details will follow in an upcoming Mentor Connection.

Reminder

1) Final exams are upcoming. Make sure your mentees are aware of the tutoring services that are offered at the College. Those students that may require additional academic support should be directed to the tutoring labs.

Mentoring Tips:

Please add the following to your Campus Resources List found in your Mentoring Handbook:

1) Student Ombuds Officer, Harriet Mesulam, extension 5414, Room M 166.

The Student Ombuds Officer is a mediator who addresses student issues, facilitates communication and resolves conflicts.. Harriet Mesulam is offering her services to the Mentoring Program as a "Mentor Consultant'. Feel free to contact Harriet if you need assistance.

2) The new Counseling Department is located in Room C 245 extension 5250. Professor Joan Edmonds is the Chairperson of the department. Contact the office if you need information on counseling services.

THE MENTORING PROGRAM STILL NEEDS MORE MENTORS. PASS THE WORD AROUND TO YOUR COLLEAGUES.

Mentoring Tips:

Many students during the Holiday Season may exhibit some degree of depression. Holiday depression may be caused by a variety of circumstances. The Holiday “Blues” can be caused by increased stress and fatigue, unrealistic expectations, overcommercialization, and the inability to be with one's family. (http://women?of faith.com/features/depression1.htm).

As a mentor you may observe from your mentees-- anger, withdrawal, a sense of uncaring, dropping out or missing classes, or a mentee may just state they feel oppressed. Fortunately for the college we have trained counselors who are able to address these concerns and help students develop constructive plans to overcome their depression. For additional information you may refer to "A Checklist For Depression” found on http://www.mhsource/com//hy/nmhmdepression.htm

'Your role as a mentor can be very helpful to connect mentees to the resources they may need. If you observe any of the above behaviors through your meetings you should contact the counseling department (ext. 5250) to discuss the appropriate steps to take.

Mentoring Tip:

Please be advised that some of your mentees who are receiving financial aid need to take courses in both session I and session 11 in order to receive full financial aid. Only those students who registered at the beginning of the semester for both sessions are able to maintain their full?time status for financial aid purposes. Therefore, make sure students, who need courses for their financial aid eligibility, MUST take and complete the balance of their courses in session II.

From the Mentoring Program we wish you a happy and healthy holiday season and best wishes in the New
Year!!!
