The Maximizing Mathematics Achievement (MaxiMA) project is funded by a Tensor-SUMMA grant (Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement ) from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), as well as LaGuardia Community College’s Office of Academic Affairs. The project is currently administered by Prof. Yuan (director) and Prof. Jaafar (co-director).
The goal of the MaxiMA project is to increase and enhance minority students’ engagement in STEM disciplines. The project’s strategy is built on studies that have shown that undergraduate research, close relationships with faculty, peer mentoring and collaboration, and career advice from their seniors, have distinct, positive effects on students and student learning. By creating and coordinating such opportunities at LaGuardia, MaxiMA helps traditionally underrepresented students in mathematics explore mathematics and mathematics related career opportunities.
The MaxiMA directors will continue to foster student research as well as build a math community with student talks, math events, and problem solving sessions for contests. These activities and opportunities will be expanded. Students who participated in student research projects during the first year will serve as mentors for new students interested in research. The program will continue to focus on assisting underrepresented students reach success in their mathematics related studies.
