Then AND Now
In 2011, LaGuardia Community College celebrates 40 years of opening the doors of higher learning to all. By challenging expectations and daring to do more everyday, LAGCC is at the forefront of momentous shifts in the landscape of higher education in the 21st century. Now, as we did then, we imagine new ideas, create new curriculum and pioneer programs to make our community and our country stronger.

40 Years of Art – Exhibit at LaGuardia

Highlighting 40 years of Alumni Art at LaGuardia, this extraordinary event will begin with a walking tour through the E, M and C buildings. Your guides will be Alums well versed in the History of Art at the College. The tour will start at the entrance to the E Building and will end at the B Building Atrium where Art from each decade will be exhibited. We will celebrate with wine and cheese along with music from a jazz quartet.

In addition, a contest will be conducted where current students will be asked to visualize what LaGuardia will look like in 2051 (40 years from now) and create art to reflect that visualization. These works will also be exhibited that night.

So come join us! The night will be a celebration of LaGuardia's Past, Present and Future!

Events and Exhibits - March 2012

Join over a million readers of all ethnic groups, from 49 states, the West Indies, and African countries in this Black History Month celebration of African American literacy, literature, and culture. This annual read-in, initiated by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in 1990, is now sponsored by the Black Caucus and the NCTE and endorsed by the International Reading Association. Schools, colleges, churches, libraries, bookstores, community and professional organizations, and interested citizens will hold read-ins throughout February.

In honor of LaGuardia's 40th anniversary, this year's read-in will pay tribute to two writers who helped to define much of the writing of the 1960s and 1970s--former LaGuardia English professor and acclaimed author John A. Williams and Piri Thomas, the enormously influential Afro-Latino memoirist and poet who passed away in 2011. All students, faculty, staff and administrators are encouraged to read. Please consider reading a selection from Professor Williams's or Mr. Thomas's work, or from any black literature that interests you. Both listeners and readers are invited, and teachers are encouraged to bring their classes.
